The Average consumption of coffee in the States is just over 3 cups a day.

2 meta- analyses published in past 2022-

 

Reducing risk of Parkinson’s disease

Reduced risk of depression

Reduced risk of type 2 diabetes Mellitus – dose related reduction in risk of diabetes the more coffee one consumes.

Vast majority of cancers decreased – eg pancreatic and prostate cancer risk decreased

 

Risks:

Problems with conception – if trying to have a baby

Large amounts can cause miscarriage

There is some talk of acrylamide in coffee -appears to be some risk with gastric cancer but the amount of acrylamide that is produced by roasting coffee is extremely small

 

Side effects:

Gastro-Oesophageal reflux disease

Insomnia

Possible irritability

 

What compounds are there in coffee contribute to the beneficial health effects:

Large amounts of antioxidants

 

Does everyone experience the same effects of coffee?

No, as people metabolise differently ..

Fast metabolisers may have more side effects.

 

What about patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation :

Data is not clear but probably no effect it seems.

Benign palpitations may increase but not  Atrial Fibrillation

 

And hypertension ?

Coffee and caffeine does increase the blood pressure a little bit – however CHRONIC intake of coffee does not cause higher blood pressure due to tolerance achieved.

 

What about stopping coffee if you are a regular drinker of coffee :

Headaches may occur if sudden withdrawal so if you want to stop then a gradual reduction is advised.Hardly

Calories ?

Hardly any in coffee but its only what you add to it eg sugar and milk
