Doctors and Patients Interrupting each other and the IMPACT thereof

In the last 50 years the model for Physician – Patient interaction has moved from physician led – paternalistic to a partnership  (Collaboration btw patient and physician).

Communication is Essential .

Often patients and physicians interrupt each other – What are the implications ?

Interruption Definition: An act that physically interrupts the flow of conversation or hinders further flow of a topic of conversation.

Interruptions can negatively impact the rapport developed between the patient and physician and communication exchange.

75 % of patients are interrupted by the physician.

However, there is something called cooperative interruptions which are directed by the physician and may even be a display of support to the patient.

These interruptions occur by the physician most commonly during the problem presentation to show agreement and ask for clarification and demonstrate engagement in the interaction. So in summary not all interruptions are negative.
